What are the scoring Subjects of GATE ECE Exam?
GATE being a gateway to higher studies from reputed institutes and to work in a prestigious government organisation, it is one of the toughest exams in India. This year IIT Madras is the organising institute for GATE 2019.
What are the scoring Subjects of GATE ECE Exam?
What are the scoring Subjects of GATE ECE Exam?
It is always advisable to have a proper strategy for preparation of this exam. There are almost 11 subjects, but few have more weightage like Mathematics, Electronic devices, Communication system etc.
Here we are going to provide the frequently asked topics of important subjects so that you can plan your preparation for GATE exam accordingly.

Important & Scoring subjects of GATE ECE Exam 2019
1. Engineering mathematics and Aptitude (30 marks)
Engineering mathematics contains 10 questions constituting a total of 15 marks and Aptitude section also has a similar pattern, that is, it also contains 10 questions with a total of 15 marks.
These two segments constitute 30% of your GATE paper; students often ignore these subjects and end up getting lower marks.
You can excuse some of the subjects like microprocessor but do not compromise with aptitude and Mathematics.
One can easily score 10 plus in aptitude and 12 plus in mathematics by providing very less effort.
Book for mathematics: B.S Grewal plus previous year paper will be sufficient.
Book for aptitude: previous year paper of all streams are sufficient; R.S. Agarwal book for verbal and non-verbal part is also good.

2. Network analysis (8-10 marks)
It is an important subject, as it helps to understand the concept of Analog circuits and control system.
Important topics are:  Network solution methods, steady state and transient and steady state analysis of RLC circuit, two port network, maximum power transfer theorem.
Book: William H. Hayt

3. Electronic devices and circuits (10-12 marks)
This subject should be covered before Analog circuits as it helps to clear the basic concepts of Analog devices.
Apart from having more weightage this subject is important for electronic students.
Important topics are:  Diffusion and drift current, P-n junction diodes and their characteristics, solar cell ,Zener diode, BJT, MOSFET, CMOS, semiconductor theory , diode capacitor.
Book : Semiconductor physics and devices by Donald Neaman.

4. Analog circuits (9-11 marks)
As this subject has more weightage it should be prepared thoroughly. It demands more time as some concepts are time taking.
Important topics are:  clipper, clamper, current mirror circuit, DC biasing-BJT, small signal modelling of BJT & FET, BJT amplifier, OP-amp, voltage reference circuits, feedback amplifiers, feedback oscillator circuit, MOSFET.
Book: Sedra and Smith’s Microelectronics.

5. Communication system (10-12 marks)
This is one of the most important subject for electronics and communication engineers.
There are some topics which are not easy to understand so it also demands more time and effort.
Important topics are :  Hilbert transform, frequency and amplitude modulation, SQNR,  Superheterodyne receivers, noise, adaptive delta modulation, random variable, FSK,PSK,QAM, power spectral density, information theory, encoding scheme, bit error probability.
Book: Modern digital and Analog communications by B.P. LATHI.

6. Digital circuits (10-11 marks)
This subject has a significant weightage but it is relatively easy to understand.
Questions asked from this segment are not time taking. Generally Microprocessor is also included in this but it has very less weightage.
Important topics are: Minimization of Boolean functions, Digital IC Families, combinational circuits, multiplexer, flip-flops, counters and shift registers, ADC, DAC, semiconductor memories.
Book: M. Morris Mano

7. Control systems (8-10 marks)
This subject is quite numerical as there are many formulas but it is also one of the scoring subject for GATE aspirants.
Important topics are:  Block diagram, R-H criterion time domain analysis, Nyquist plot, bode plot, root locus technique, compensators and controllers, steady state error, state variable analysis.
Books: Automatic control systems by Benjamin C. Kuo

8. Signal and System (7-9 marks)
This subject should be done before control system and communication. It is the one of  the most important subject as it forms the base for other subjects.
Important topics are:  Basic properties, LTI system and their response, Fourier series and transform, pole-zero, z-transform, filter, sampling theorem, DFT, DTFT, energy and power of digital filter.
Books: Signal and systems by Alan V. Oppenheim

9. Electromagnetism (8-10 marks)
This subject has good weightage. It is bit tough to understand, although once understood, it is easy to score.
Important topics are: Electrostatics, magnetic field, Lorentz force, uniform plane waves, antenna characteristics, radars, optical fibre, transmission lines.
Books:  Principles of electromagnetics by Matthew N.O. Sadiku

This analysis is based on previous year questions.  To get a good rank you must have crystal clear concepts of each and every topic (especially the important topics listed above). And it is always advisable to make short notes of these subjects, since they are very handy during the final phase of GATE exam preparation, i.e. revision. We hope this analysis will be useful for your GATE ECE exam preparation.
